Montessori Education was formulated by
Dr Maria Montessori Circa - 1907
As a medical doctor, she began her career working with physically and mentally handicapped children. Her success in educating these children was so remarkable that it led to question conventional methods of education for normal children, which she felt, restricted them from realizing their full potential.
Dr Montessori realized that children should be fully stimulated from birth to six years in order to prepare the path for all later learning. In her own words this is when the child has an "absorbent mind" and passes through crucial "sensitive periods" of learning. Thus the Montessori method gives full attention to the importance of early education.
Although considered revolutionary at the time, recent findings in development and educational psychology have confirmed the value of Montessori education, thus giving momentum to an increasing awareness amongst parents and teachers.
